Dr. Cathy Purvis Lively is an attorney, mediator, bioethicist, educator, and scholar whose professional and academic work integrates healthcare, law, and ethics. She began her professional career as a nurse, with experience in adult and neonatal intensive care, case management, and healthcare program administration. As an attorney, she focused her practice on family law, health-related legal matters, mediation, and bioethics. Dr. Lively is a Faculty Associate in the Bioethics Program at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies and an Adjunct Instructor at Beal University. Dr. Lively’s scholarship addresses health equity, resource allocation, advance care planning, immigration and healthcare, care of unrepresented patients, organ donation and transplantation ethics, long-term care, and bioethics mediation. She is a peer reviewer and editor for Columbia University’s Voices in Bioethics, a peer reviewer for Springer and Wiley journals, and the 2026-2027 Chair of The Florida Bar Journal and News Editorial Board. She serves on the Advisory Board of the Florida Bioethics Network and is a member of the Innovative Bioethics Forum. She served as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy from 2023 through October 2025. She frequently presents at national and international conferences on bioethics, healthcare ethics, law, and professional ethics. Dr. Lively earned her Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University, her Master of Science in Bioethics from Columbia University, and her Doctorate in Bioethics from Loyola University Chicago. Dr. Lively’s involvement with Bioethics Education International began as a participant in its summer and winter educational programs. She returned over multiple years, finding the programs intellectually engaging, compelling, and rewarding. She is honored to expand her involvement with Bioethics Education International and contribute to its educational mission.
