Artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly been applied to healthcare, offering promising and cost-efficient solutions for long-standing challenges. TrialGPT is another example of the drive to harness the transformative potential of AI in clinical research, this time to streamline patient recruitment for clinical trials. Developed by the University of Illinois and the U.S. National Institutes of Health, this novel AI tool applies large language models (LLMs) to identify relevant clinical trials, assess patient eligibility, and rank trials based on suitability. Although the technology is in its early stages of development, there are heightened expectations that it will enhance efficiency in patient recruitment and improve enrollment rates in clinical trials. According to a recent study by Jin et al. (2024), TrialGPT has demonstrated good performance, with data indicating its high accuracy rate (up to 87.3%) in trial eligibility assessments and significantly reduced screening time. Read More.
