Increasing Access to Hepatitis C Medication through Clinical Trials: Views from Rwanda and Vietnam

This talk explores the use of clinical trials as a means to increase access to medications in low and middle income countries. Drawing on ethnographic data collected during two hepatitis C treatment studies conducted in Rwanda and Vietnam, Dr. Van Nuil will detail the myriad impacts of the clinical trials beyond the participant and the fluid ways in which the studies are portrayed to multiple stakeholders along its implementation. In the discussion, she will explore how clinical trials become social goods in certain times and places while at other times, they become social harms.
