A community called Women in AI Ethics recently shared a reading list on The Dark Side of Silicon Valley: eight books, including Dying for an iPhone, Atlas of AI, Your Face Belongs to Us, Careless People, and Empire of AI. Each tackles a different issue, from exploited factory labor and facial recognition built by scraping billions of faces without consent to insider accounts of decisions made far from public view. Together, a pattern emerges: extraction of labor and data, concealment of what’s really happening inside these companies, and decision making that stays narrow despite claims of diversity.
