A Yakima County, Washington, resident who had underlying health conditions has died of H5N1 bird flu after being exposed at a dairy with infected cattle. It is the first U.S. bird flu death in a year and the third since the virus became a national concern in 2024. County officials report that 33 dairy herds have recently tested positive and that three human infections have been linked to dairy exposure. Health officials are monitoring close contacts for symptoms. The CDC found no genetic changes that would make the virus spread more easily or cause more severe illness. It says there is no known person-to-person spread and that the risk to the general public remains low. Read more here.
