Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a severe and often fatal illness caused by a species of Ebola virus. The patient, a Kenyan citizen who fell ill in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, traveled by road to Uganda and then flew to Nairobi, where they were isolated but later died. Authorities are now tracing 28 contacts and fellow flight passengers. Kenya has been on high alert since May, and candidate vaccines and treatments are still being tested in clinical trials.
