Public health communication has to do two things at once: tell the truth and keep people functioning. When regulators say “the food supply is safe” while cases are still rising and the source remains unknown, they’re making a judgment about which truth matters most. The FDA’s acknowledgment that root-cause investigations are still underway makes that reassurance more defensible, yet it also raises a harder question: what do we owe consumers when we genuinely don’t know why something happened, only that it did?
