Scientists have developed an implantable “myograft,” lab grown, continuously contracting muscle tissue that mimicked several benefits of exercise in mice, including greater muscle mass, strength, bone density, and metabolic improvements, even in aged and obese animals. Researchers hope the approach could eventually help people who are too frail, elderly, or immobile to exercise. However, outside experts caution that achieving similar benefits in humans would likely require multiple invasive grafts, creating a significant barrier for the very patients who could benefit most.
