A new study found that at least one in four former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated head impacts. Researchers identified CTE in 215 of the 235 players whose brains were donated for examination, making the true prevalence among former players difficult to determine and potentially higher. The findings add to growing concerns about the long term neurological consequences of football and raise questions about player safety, informed risk, and how much responsibility sports organizations have to reduce repeated head impacts at all levels of the game.
